Types Of Dental Implants

If you’re currently walking around the greater Houston area with one or more broken or missing teeth, dental implants are a great way to restore your smile back to the way it was intended to be. Dental implants are essentially permanent tooth replacements that are securely anchored in your mouth, and implants come in various sizes, lengths and types. At byte Dentistry, Dr. Emdin is highly trained to use several different types of dental implants on her patients to artistically restore their smiles based on their individual needs.

The 2 Main Dental Implants Options

Dental implants are made of titanium and shaped like small screws. That screw-like implant is then surgically inserted by Dr. Emdin using one of these two methods:

  • Endosteal

These dental implants are placed directly into a patient’s jawbone.

  • Subperiosteal

This type of implant is placed under the gumline while resting on, or sitting directly above, the jawbone. Dr. Emdin uses this procedure when the patient is lacking enough healthy natural jawbone and they’ve decided not to get bone augmentation surgery to rebuild it.

Other Dental Implant Care Procedures

Based on your personal objectives and after first assessing the overall health of your jawbone using precise 3D digital imaging, Dr. Emdin may recommend an alternative type of dental implant procedure, such as:

  • All-on-4

Also known as “full arch implants”, these are used as an alternative to dentures when replacing a set of 4 or more, top or bottom teeth.

  • Immediate Load Dental Implants

Also called “same-day implants”, as the name implies immediate load dental implants allow Dr. Emdin to also place a temporary replacement tooth during the same appointment that the dental implant is inserted.

  • Mini-Dental Implants (MDIs)

Commonly referred to as “small implants” or “narrow- diameter implants”, MDIs are toothpick-sized implants that are inserted during a less- invasive procedure by Dr. Emdin that are then used to secure a set of lower dentures.

If Additional Preparation is Needed

If Dr. Emdin determines that your jawbone can’t currently support dental implants, we have a periodontal expert on staff who can perform various procedures to rebuild the bone, restore your natural jawline and provide a solid foundation for implant-supported replacement teeth. Those procedures include:

  • Bone Augmentation

This process involves the restoring or regenerating of healthy bone tissue. Studies have found that bone-fortifying additives and growth factors typically achieve the best results.

  • Ridge Expansion

If your jaw isn’t wide enough to support dental implants, bone material can be added to the small space, or “ridge”, that’s formed by the top of the jaw

  • Sinus Lift

Also referred to as a “sinus elevation” or “sinus augmentation” procedure, a sinus lift is when the doctor adds some bone tissue below the sinus area once the natural bone has deteriorated because of several missing upper back teeth.
